The CEL246 is a data logging integrating sound level meter that meets the international standards to Type 2 / Class 2, as required by many noise measurement standards. It measures and stores the Lavg and Leq along with the Fast or Slow sound level and comes with both A and C frequency weightings.
The CEL246 meets the strict demands of the international sound level meter standards and is provided with a Calibration Certificate at no extra cost, so you can make your noise measurements with confidence. This is most important when using a meter in a hearing protection and conservation program.
An AC output and optional DC output mean this meter can be connected to a level recorder, PC equipped with an A/D converter or integrated with another data logging system.
A standard (non integrating) sound level meter gives an instantaneous reading of the sound level. In an environment where the sound levels are changing continuously, as most are, it can be very difficult to average this by eye. The solution is to use an Integrating sound level meter such as the CEL246, which will give you a reading of Lavg or Leq, depending on which regulations are being followed.
Due to the risk of underestimating the average sound level, especially if you fail to take into account the logarithmic nature of the decibel, many regulations advise or even demand the use of an Integrating Sound Level Meter.
The graphical display gives the option of viewing the sound level as a simple number (shown to the left) or as a graph, clearly showing the variation of noise over time (see main image).
The CEL246 stores the sound level to internal memory at a rate that can be set from 1 second to 10 seconds. It also stores a summary of the measurement, including start time, date, measurement duration, maximum sound level, Lavg and Leq.
Free software is included with the meter to download the measurements and transfer into Excel or similar spreadsheet. For more information about additional software please visit the CEL246 Software page.
The CEL246 Data Logging, Integrating Sound Level Meter is predominantly intended for the measurement of occupational noise, although it is suitable for many other applications too.
When noise levels are not stable, as is usually the case with noise in the workplace, it can be very difficult to work out the average by eye. The CEL246 is an integrating sound level meter and so provides you with an average as recommended by many regulations: for OSHA in the USA you would use the Lavg; for many other regulations including the EU and much of Canada you would use the Leq.
The CEL 244 can be switched between "A" and "C" frequency weighting. These measurements can be used to assess the effectiveness of hearing protection using the HML method.
For environments with very loud banging noises you should use a meter that provide Peak measurements too.
The data logging facility means you can leave the meter running for a longer period of time, download the measurement and then identify the noisier times of day and assess a worker's noise exposure by calculating the TWA.
As system integration via the USB interface can be complex, the CEL246 has an AC output and an optional (free of charge) DC output, making it ideal for connection to a data logging system via a suitable A/D converter.
The CEL246 Sound Level Meter is controlled using just two buttons, one to the left and one to the right. The graphical display ensures that operation and the selection of options is as easy as possible.
Ensure 3 x AA batteries are fitted on press the red button to switch the sound level meter on. After a brief warm-period of just a few seconds, the meter will show the current sound level on the display.
The exact content of the display depends on how you set the meter up last time, as it remembers these settings for your convenience.
Some regulations and guidelines state that the meter's calibration should be checked before making measurements, and that you should keep records of these calibration checks.
Fit the Calibrator over the microphone and switch it on. The meter automatically detects the presence and correct fitting of the Calibrator and then starts the calibration process, which only takes a few seconds.
As the meter saves its settings, you should only need to do this occasionally. The left-hand button cycles through the following main settings:
|Record Data||Start recording the 1-second measurements|
|Display Type||Graph or numbers|
|Measurement Range||30 to 100 dB or 60 to 130 dB|
|Time Weighting||Fast, Slow or Impulse|
|Frequency Weighting||A or C weighting|
|Average Setting||Measure Leq or Lavg (for OSHA)|
The right-hand button is used to change the current setting of any of these parameters.
You can now read the sound level from the display.
Press the reset button (right-hand button) to reset the max reading.
As well as being ideal for making quick on-site noise measurements, the CEL242 can store the sound level every second. When downloaded to a computer this information can be used to produce a graph of the sound level over time.
There are three software options for the CEL242, with the most basic one being included free of charge with the meter.
This is available for free download with this meter. It connects to the sound level meter and presents the measurements in simple CSV files. The measurements can be copied to your hard drive for long term storage and can be loaded directly into Excel or similar spreadsheet program.
The web based NoiseMeters Applications runs in your browser to produce noise reports from the measurements made with your CEL242 sound level meter. A small sync program runs on your computer and uploads the measurements to the web server. You simply login to view your reports.
To receive NoiseMeters Applications add NMAPPS to your order.
If you are unsure then you can purchase it at a later date. All we need is the serial number from your meter to register it online.
The CEL242 is a "general purpose" sound level meter, and so meets the international standards to Type 2 or Class 2. For any noise measurement that requires accurate, repeatable and comparable results, especially when used for hearing protection or other legal purposes, it is essential to use one that meets these standards.
